Atlético Ottawa Sign Sergio Camus on Loan

Atlético Ottawa Sign Sergio Camus on Loan

On Wednesday afternoon, Atlético Ottawa announced they have signed Sergio Camus on loan for the remainder of the 2022 Canadian Premier League season. This move comes as the transfer window is about to close for the league. Camus comes from the mother club, Atlético Madrid.

Born April 19, 1997, in Colindres, Spain, Camus is a 25-year-old defender who plays primarily right back but can slot into center defence if needed. Most recently, Camus suited up for Atlético Madrid B. He started his playing career with Racing Santander of La Liga 2. He has bounced around various tiers of Spanish soccer quite a bit, having also played for Arenas Getxo, CD Vitoria, and Portugalete, before signing for Atlético Madrid.

“I am delighted to come and join Atlético Ottawa,” said Camus. “I’ve watched a lot of highlights and some games in the past few days, and I love the connection with the fans. I’m looking forward to joining the team, putting in the hard work, and giving everything I have to help us reach our goals.”

Camus has had two senior appearances for Atlético Madrid both were as unused substitutes, in a 2021 Champions League match against AC Milan, and a Copa del Rey match against Real Sociedad.

Camus will add important depth to the Ottawa back line, which has so far been quite lucky this year injury-wise, especially when compared to other teams in the league. Look for him to challenge Miguel Acosta for the starting right-back role.

“We’re happy to welcome Sergio to our Ottleti family,” commented Fernando López, CEO of Atlético Ottawa. “Sergio will provide the club with a lot of flexibility; we will be able to use his talents in multiple roles within our system which will be important for us in the final stretch of the season. He has demonstrated to be a capable centre back with his biggest strengths being his strong aerial ability and his anticipation in the defensive third.”

This is Ottawa’s third signing this season that has been made possible due to the connection with the mother club of Atlético Madrid, with the others being Diego Espejo on loan from Atlético Madrid, and Vladimir Moragrega on loan from Atlético San Luis.
