McLeod Bethel-Thompson Opts Out of CFL Contract

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, McLeod Bethel-Thompson has opted out of his contract and is looking for an NFL opportunity.

In three CFL seasons, Bethel-Thompson has thrown for 6,227 yards, 35 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. He spent all three seasons with the Toronto Argonauts and made the playoffs only in 2017, where he only threw 2 passes.

Bethel-Thompson has spent time with a laundry list of NFL teams but only made the roster two times. That was with the Minnesota Vikings in 2012-13 and with the San Francisco 49ers in 2013. He has also spent time in the Arena Football League with the San Jose SaberCats in 2011.

Bethel-Thompson had been looking to secure a starting spot in the CFL ever since he came into the league, and the Argos didn’t seem to want to use him as the starting quarterback. Despite some solid numbers in 2019 for Bethel-Thompson, the Argos signed Matt Nichols to a three-year deal in the offseason that appeared to make Bethel-Thompson the backup in Argo-land once again.

With the season officially cancelled and without a starting spot, Bethel-Thompson has decided it is now the time to take another crack at the NFL.

Bethel-Thompson doesn’t boast the best arm or the fastest legs, but he does have a nice mix of the two that can work in a pinch. He’s also a great veteran player to have.

Rapoport called Bethel-Thompson “An intriguing veteran who can learn a system quickly, now has plenty of snaps.”
