Week five of the CFL has come and gone and it has left some teams with more questions than answers and in a shortened season, they need to find the answers fast. Here are five questions we have after week five.

Can Dominique Davis Right the Ship In Ottawa?

The 2019 season is a season Dominique Davis and the Redblacks faithful would like to forget, but after another sloppy start by quarterback Matt Nichols against Montreal that saw him go two for five with 23 yards and an interception, Davis took over in the second quarter and helped lead the offence to their first offensive TD of the year. Even though Ottawa would end up losing the game 51-29, Davis showed that he could run the offence and drive the field on a consistent basis.

Davis ended up only having one two-and-out drive after taking over the offence in the second quarter while throwing 23 for 33 for 291 yards two touchdowns and two interceptions. After a full week of first-team reps in head coach Paul LaPolice’s offence, could Davis be the answer to a consistent Redblacks offence in a still tight East division?

Who Is the Argos Best QB?

What’s going on with the Argonauts offence? For the second time in four games, we have seen the Argonauts switch their quarterback mid-way through the game due to the lack of offence. With so many familiar faces in that offence, the majority of football fans would have expected a more explosive and consistent offence but it just hasn’t materialized.

With both Bethel-Thompson and Arbuckle being benched for each other, neither player has been able to take control and run with the offence early in the season. In a short season and how close the division is, they need to figure out who will lead this team sooner rather than later.

Is Jake Maier a Franchise QB?

After Bo Levi Mitchell went down with a leg injury after their week two loss to the BC Lions, everyone expected Canadian Michael O’Connor who won the backup spot after training camp to get the start week three against the Montreal Alouettes, but when the Depth Chart came out, it was in fact rookie American Jake Maier getting the start.

Now, three weeks into his CFL career, a 1-2 record and three straight 300+ yard games, is Maier the next Franchise CFL quarterback? Maier, even though he has thrown for 939 yards across three games, has just two touchdown passes and two interceptions. It’s still early but as long as Bo Levi Mitchell is hurt, Maier will need to lead this Stampeders team back from this 1-4 record.

Will Masoli be traded?

After being replaced by Evans in a 30-8 loss to Saskatchewan in week 2, questions came up about who would start behind center after their week three bye. Evans ended up being named ahead of their week four matchup against the Montreal Alouettes and led Hamilton to their first win of the 2021 season.

Heading into week five, Masoli was placed on the one-game injured list. Evans then lead Hamilton to a dominant win over the Argonauts. It’s clear that Evans is now Hamilton’s bonafide QB1, will Hamilton look to move Masoli or allow him to walk for nothing in February?

Could We See an East Team Crossover to the West?

We could see the answer to this question unfold sooner rather than later but an Ottawa win vs BC Lions along with a Calgary win vs Edmonton Elks could set things up for a very interesting September with how the standings look.

Fans and media and even players are used to a West cross over to the east but could this season provide fans with some new spice to the CFL playoffs.
